The Pro-24 had 24 tracks with a more powerful editing engine that allowed for versatile production techniques to be used.

As I had the Roland MT-32 sound engine at the time, I was looking for a graphical editor to be able to program the instrument. Luckily, Steinberg had at the time Synthworks MT-32, a full programmer/librarian software for Roland MT-32.
Having purchased two software pieces, each requiring a dongle was an issue as Atari 1040ST only had one printer port, in which the dongle is connected to.

The solution was Steinberg Midex, a 4 midi out, two midi in and empty slots for 4 copy protection dongles. This setup allowed me not only to leverage Steinberg M-ROS, which is Steinberg’s pseudo multi tasking features, allowing to run both Pro-24 and Syntheworks MT-32 at the same time, but also 96 midi out ports and 32 midi in ports. I could expand my studio further!

Atari 1040 ST with a color display.

Steinberg Pro-24 music composition software

Steinberg Midex hardware

Sequencer journey part 1: '86-'88
<dc:subject>Blog</dc:subject>

Up until 1986, I was happily programming my beloved Atari 800XL in Basic, Assembler and C, but when I got my first synthesizer, Roland HS-60 (a Juno 106 with speakers) I immediately looked for ways to compose full length musical pieces with it. A local Hybrid Arts distributor provided me with a MidiMate device, connecting the Roland with my compute, also included a copy of Hybrid Arts’ MidiTrack II sequencer software.

As seen in the attached photos, the software’s interface was quite crude, but provided me with hours upon hours of pure fun recording compositions. The album ‘Projects I’ contains music created with that setup.

In the screen image, one can notice 16 tracks, track name, send/receive via up/down arrow, type of midi event, number of transmitted notes and percentage of memory used for that track.

More on Hybrid Arts can be found here.

Nibiru Album Arrival transcript
<dc:subject>Blog</dc:subject>

Here’s the full text of the Arrival track transcript. The text is being spoken by a computer software that handles speech to text which undergoes vocoding to melody.

“6000 years ago, the Sumerian civilization had flourished. Many clay tablets have been preserved to tell its story. Within those tablets are defined some of the very basic elements which are widely used today like the modern calendar and the metric system.

Astronomy held an important place at that time.

It was also said that the earth is a round blue ball, a view that can only be seen from outer space.

It is at that time that records of extra-terrestrial visits have been documented in clay in the form of the gods coming down from heaven to rule the earth, those gods are references by the Sumerians as Anunnaki.

Moreover, the giant leap mankind have made in the past several tens of thousands of years is attributed to genetic engineering by the Anunnaki.

Recent advances in DNA research have established that there was an Eve who lived about 250 to 270 thousand years ago, a first mother from who all modern humans stem, no matter what their racial heritage is.
Anunnaki originated from the 10th planet in the solar system, a planet called "Nibiru", which stands for "The Planet Of The Crossing" and its symbol in the Sumerian clay tablets is the cross sign.

Modern science has not yet located "Nibiru" as it is said that it has a rotation span around the sun of 3600 years, though irregularities in the orbits of Neptune and Pluto suggests a strong gravitational force of a nearby planet.

This is the musical voyage of the 10th planet "Nibiru" and its inhabitants the "Anunnaki", which have come to planet earth and changed its nature forever.”

Moab Released!
<dc:subject>Blog</dc:subject>

Moab is now released! This has the effect of less focus on individual elements’ structure and quality and when glueing everything together, the musical piece suffered.

I was looking after a Midi step sequencer that one can use to work on a given pattern at a time, and spend enough time on it.

When shopping around, I soon realized the price range for commercial products is too high for my taste and have elected to build a device on my own making, tailoring it to my requirements and meeting price/value constraints.

I soon discovered the MIDIBox project http://www.ucapps.de/. This site’s all about DIY projects for MIDI enthusiasts, ranging from control boxes, sequencers and even Commodore 64 SID chip modules.

Purchasing the required PCBs, I then headed strait to building the sequencer's guts. This was fairly easy. The tricky part was the front panel.

I had ordered a ready made front panel from Front Panel Express, an online service that has a fairly easy software to design the front panel, and then went to build and wire the front panel layout.

Well, after about 2-3 months of work (not continues of course), I had finally completed my first big DIY project and it worked like a charm!

Upgrading the master keyboard
<dc:subject>Blog</dc:subject>

Three years ago I had purchased the M-Audio Keystation Pro 88 to serve as my main, and only, keyboard controller. As there are more buckets, a longer delay can be realized and with each bucket shift, sound resolution is lost, creating the warm effect of slowly decaying repeats.

At first I was looking for a Blacet Time Machine, some time not in production but as soon as I saw its price on the used market (>$500) I
reverted to searching the web for alternatives and stumbled across the General Guitar Gadgets site.
